6 vie for Ambala Mayor’s post, 41 booths vulnerable in Sonepat

The stage is all set for the Ambala Municipal Corporation election for which polling will be held on Sunday.

A multi-cornered contest will be witnessed among the candidates of BJP, Haryana Jan Chetna Party (V), HDF and Congress.

As per the data provided, there are 1,87,604 eligible voters under the Municipal Corporation limits and they will exercise their franchise on 198 booths to elect 20 municipal councillors and one mayor.

As many as six candidates are in the fray for the post of Mayor -— Dr Vandana Sharma (BJP), Meena Aggarwal (Congress), Amisha Chawla (HDF), Shaktirani Sharma (HJP), Jolly (BSP) and Gurmeet Kaur (Independent). An Independent candidate Veena Dhal who filed her nomination for the mayoral post later extended support to Shaktirani Sharma. In all, 101 candidates are in fray for 20 seats of the MC.

Returning officer-cum-SDM, Ambala, Sachin Gupta said, "The election-related material has been distributed. Due to Covid, the polling parties have also been provided PPE kits, masks and sanitisers. All arrangements have been made for the peaceful conduct of the election."

Sonepat: All arrangements are in place for the Sonepat MC poll scheduled for Sunday. As many as 2,48,099 voters in 20 wards will exercise their franchise. The city was upgraded to Municipal Corporation in 2015.

The result will be announced on December 30. As many as 10 candidates are in the fray for the Mayor's post while 110 candidates are contesting for the posts of councillor.

Though 10 candidates are in the fray for the mayoral post, the main contest is between BJP-JJP candidate Lalit Batra and Congress candidate Nikhil Madaan.

As many as 245 polling booths have been set up of which 41 have been marked "vulnerable".

District Electoral Officer and DC Sonepat SL Poonia said everything is set to conduct the poll in a free and fair atmosphere. All polling parties were sent to their booths today. The electors have to cast two votes -ndash; one for Mayor and one for councillor.
