The trigger
Inspector Mahabir, SHO, Kalka police station, said they had recorded the suspect's statement in which he stated that he loved the girl and wanted to marry her. But her parents had fixed her marriage somewhere else, which prompted him to take the extreme step.
The girl's grandfather, identified as Harminder Lal, suffered burns on his arms, legs and the face.
The incident took place around 8.30 pm when Sumit, barged into the girl's house at Basant Vihar in Kalka, poured petrol on himself and set himself on fire by lighting a matchstick. He then embraced the girl's grandfather.
