Panchkula, March 27

A 26-year-old youth from Pinjore set himself ablaze and embraced the grandfather of the girl whom he wanted to marry at Kalka here on Friday evening.

The suspect, identified as Sumit, sustained major burn injuries and was taken to the Kalka Sub-Divisional Hospital, from where he was referred to the GMCH-32 in Chandigarh and further to the PGI. He suffered around 70 per cent burns and his condition was critical, said the police.

The trigger

Inspector Mahabir, SHO, Kalka police station, said they had recorded the suspect's statement in which he stated that he loved the girl and wanted to marry her. But her parents had fixed her marriage somewhere else, which prompted him to take the extreme step.

The girl's grandfather, identified as Harminder Lal, suffered burns on his arms, legs and the face.

The incident took place around 8.30 pm when Sumit, barged into the girl's house at Basant Vihar in Kalka, poured petrol on himself and set himself on fire by lighting a matchstick. He then embraced the girl's grandfather.

According to the complainant, Tanya, the girl whom the suspect wanted to marry, her mother managed to pull Sumit away from her grandfather.

On February 12 too, the suspect had entered the girl's house and threatened to marry her forcefully, she added. The woman's family had even approached the police. Later, both parties reached a compromise. A case has been registered under Sections 307 (attempt to murder), 309 (attempt to commit suicide), and 452 of the IPC at the Kalka police station.
