Chandigarh, December 15
Leader of the Opposition in the MC House Devinder Singh Babla has written to UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore requesting him to raise the tenure of the Mayor to five years. Earlier, former BJP MP Satya Pal Jain had also made a similar request.
“I request you that the forthcoming Chandigarh Municipal Corporation elections in 2021 should be held on the lines of Punjab and Haryana. The Mayor should be directly elected by residents. The tenure of the Mayor should also be five years,” the senior Congress councillor wrote.
“When the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation comes under the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, why cannot the elections be held under the same Act? A tenure of one-year is too little for a Mayor,” Babla wrote further.
“The election of Mayor is necessary for the development of the city so that the Mayor can exercise his/her powers without hesitation. As of now, the bureaucracy barely allows the Mayor |to interfere in the decision making processes,” he added.
