Panchkula saw development in my last tenure: Ahluwalia

Tribune News Service

Panchkula, December 18

Congress' mayoral candidate Upinder Kaur Ahluwalia said today that defeat in the Panchkula MC poll was staring the BJP in the face and the party was making baseless claims.

Six in race for Mayor's post

Panchkula: With two candidates withdrawing their names, at least six persons have been left in the race for the post of Mayor in the Panchkula Municipal Corporation elections. The candidates are Kulbhushan Goyal (BJP), Upinder Kaur Ahluwalia (Congress), Anil Pangotra (BSP), Sudershan Bansal (Janral Samaj Party), Padam Garg (Independent) and Shyam Singh Negi (Independent). "As many as 34 candidates withdrew their nominations for posts of councillor, leaving 83 candidates in the final run for all 20 wards," said ADC Mohd Imran Raza, who is the returning officer for the elections. tns

"The BJP has put hurdles in the path of development rather than supporting it. People of Panchkula have seen my work during my last tenure as the Mayor and nobody could deny the development works carried out by us," she said.

Shedding further the light on her stint, Ahluwalia said community centres were built in a majority of the villages, roads were constructed and repaired and sweeping work was regularised under my tenure.

On shifting the garbage dumping site from near a residential area, she said: "We had passed a resolution pro-actively, however, it was not executed further." They had planned a cattle shed that was now lying incomplete, she said. "All development works came to a halt in June 2018, when our stint at the MC ended. If voted to power, we will accelerate the all-round development of the town again. Our motto is to work for the betterment of people at grassroots," she said.

The vision

She unveiled her vision for the city, which touches upon agendas such as health and sanitation, issue of stray cattle/dogs, 24x7 clean water supply, installation of CCTV cameras and disbanding of enhancement in various sectors.

Ahluwalia also promised strengthening of government services, relocation of the dumping site, upkeep and covering of Singh Nullah, uplifting slums, disband paid parking system, maintenaince and beautification of public parks, dedicated beat constables for the safety of women and elderly people, installation of a modern library and rehabilitation of street vendors.
