Fraud suspect dies in custody at Dera Bassi

A 67-year-old Delhi resident, Paramjit Singh, died under mysterious circumstances at a police station here early this morning.

According to the police, a case of fraud was registered against him at the Zirakpur police station on the basis of a report of the EO wing. The police had arrested him and produced him before a court, which remanded him in one-day police custody.

The police had taken him to the Dera Bassi police station instead of the Zirakpur police station. Suddenly, he complained of a breathing problem and was taken to the Civil Hospital at Dera Bassi around 11.45 pm. Around 12.30 am, he was discharged as his condition improved. He was taken to the police station. However, he was again rushed to the hospital at 8 am today where doctors declared him brought dead.

A post-mortem was conducted by a board of three doctors under the judicial supervision of Dera Bassi Judge Gaurav Dutta.

The whole process was videographed. Zirakpur SHO Rajpal Singh Gill said the Delhi resident already had health issues.

Civil Hospital SMO Dr Sangeeta Jain said the man was brought to the hospital late on Wednesday night and was taken back to the police station after his health improved.

She said when he was brought to hospital this morning, he had already died. She said his Covid test was also conducted.
