By March-April next year, Sehaj Safai Kendras (SSKs) are likely to be replaced with three material recovery facilities (MRFs).
Officials said two MRFs, which were being constructed in the Industrial Area, Phase I (MC store in front of the CTU workshop), and the Industrial Area, Phase II (3BRD), would be ready by March 2021. The third MRF at Dadu Majra will be ready a month later.
"By March-April, all three facilities will be ready to replace SSKs," said NK Sharma, General Manager, Chandigarh Smart City Limited. There are about 40 SSKs in the city and these are being shut down in a phased manner.
The MC plans to add 390 more two-bin vehicles by December 31. Following this, the vehicles will replace 'rehris' for collecting door-to-door garbage.
At present, collectors lift waste from households and drop it at SSKs. It is then taken to the waste processing plant by MC waste trucks. However, the new vehicles will lift garbage from houses and directly drop it at the three MRFs. From there, the wet waste will be transported to the processing plant and dry waste will be shifted to the construction and demolition plant.
"We will have nine tippers of 20 cubic metre capacity each at the three recovery facilities. They will transport the waste to the plant," said the official.
Besides, the civic body will set up a supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) facility under which all waste vehicles will be tracked online.
The SSKs are often seen overflowing with waste and residents living in the neighbourhood have been raising the issue. The new system will curb the practice of throwing waste in the open. City's waste management system had received three stars in the garbage-free rating released for 141 cities by the Centre this year. With this new system, the MC hopes to reach five or seven-star rating.
