In what reflects the desperation for a government job among the youth, Punjab has received over 200 times the number of applications than the advertised posts of patwari, which offers a mere Rs 5,000 as stipend during the 18-month training.

Against 1,152 posts, 2,33,181 applications have been received, meaning there are over 200 contenders for every post. While the basic qualification is graduation, among the applicants are M.Phil degree holders, postgraduates and PhD students.

Lure of government job

  • A newly recruited patwari gets Rs5,000 as stipend during 18-month training and Rs20,000 after that for first three years
  • The post was once considered lucrative as the official has access to revenue records
  • With most records now available online, the role of patwaris is said to be diminishing, although the latter claim their job is still significant

After the successful completion of training, the patwari gets nearly Rs 20,000 for the first three years before being given the full pay scale. The post of patwari was once considered lucrative as the official has access to revenue records. With most of the records now available online, the role of patwaris is said to be diminishing.

Some patwaris, however, claim their job is still relevant as it becomes difficult to get a correction made if there are errors in online revenue record. Given the huge rush of applicants, the Services Selection Board (SSB), which is conducting the recruitment, has scheduled two tests.

Raman Behal, Chairman, SSB, said the first test would be a preliminary exam to be held next month across 550 centres. "We will hold the second test for 11,520 shortlisted candidates. It is going to be a challenging task for us," he said.
