Defer elective surgeries, pvt hospitals told

The government has urged private hospitals on board for Covid-19 treatment to defer elective surgeries till April 30 to meet the rising demand for Covid beds.

Health and Family Welfare Principal Secretary Hussan Lal today chaired a virtual meeting with private hospitals of the state for Covid-19 management. He directed all private hospitals to charge at government fixed rates for the treatment and avoid overcharging. There are 213 private hospitals on board for Covid treatment in the state at present and the government has provided 230 ventilators to private hospitals, which should be used optimally.

58 deaths in 24 hours

• The state reported 3,294 cases, including 58 deaths, in the past 24 hours
• Hoshiarpur topped the chart with 10 deaths, followed by Gurdaspur (7), Jalandhar and Ludhiana (6 each), Amritsar (5), Patiala and Ropar (4 each)
• Bathinda, Moga, SAS Nagar, Pathankot and Tarn Taran reported two deaths each, Barnala, Sangrur, SBS Nagar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Ferozepur, Kapurthala (1 each)

Lal expressed concern about rising number of fatalities, especially while shifting patients from L2 to L3 facilities, and advised that referral should be made in time. He said 20,000 doses of Remdesivir had been provided to government and private hospitals and these were available free of cost. He further exhorted hospitals to refer patients to appropriate level in time if they felt they required higher level of hospitalisation.

About vaccine, he said as it was precious, its wastage should be avoided. He urged private hospitals to set up vaccination centres and reiterated that oxygen demand and supply must be communicated to the Civil Surgeon of the district so that in case of any additional requirement, it could be made available in time.

He also expressed concern over critical care specialists of private hospitals not attending sessions being organised by Dr KK Talwar and advised hospitals to ensure that they attended these webinars.
