Tribune News Service

Mohali, March 19

The Punjab Government should initiate steps to pay compensation to about 120 illiterate war widows whose cases were pending with the state government due to the indifferent attitude of politicians as well as the bureaucracy.

Lt Col SS Sohi (retd), president, Ex-Servicemen Grievances Cell, in a letter to Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, said there were still several war widows of the 1962, 1965 and 1971 wars in Punjab who had not received land or money announced by the state government from time to time.

He said widows of soldiers killed in the three wars were still forced to move from one place to another to get the compensation. According to information collected from sources, 120 cases of war widows were still pending who had not received any land or financial assistance from the government and there were cases where family members of illiterate war widows have filed cases in courts seeking compensation.

Sohi said there were several cases where war widows could not file their cases on time due to illiteracy, ignorance and other reasons. War veterans had special status in society and these families could not be deprived of land or financial assistance just because they did not file the case on time. He urged the Punjab Chief Minister to provide immediate relief to the war widows.
