The shortage of doctors continues to be the Achilles heel of the Haryana Government, as nearly one-fourth (25 per cent) of the 4,800 sanctioned posts are lying vacant, taking a toll on healthcare services, said Health Minister Anil Vij in the Vidhan Sabha here today.
Vij said that of the 4,800 sanctioned posts of doctors in Haryana, 1,141 were vacant. "The state government is making efforts to recruit 400 to 500 doctors to tide over the shortage," he added.
He said that the problem had compounded, as around 200 doctors were working on deputation in the Union Territory of Chandigarh. The deputation of doctors to Chandigarh was necessary, as Haryana has to maintain the 60:40 ratio vis-agrave;-vis Punjab in the UT Health Department. Besides, around 200 doctors remain on leave at any given time.
Vij said that to tide over the shortage of doctors, a separate cadre of specialist doctors was being created with lucrative pay scales. Besides, around 200 extra posts were being created for posting doctors in Chandigarh.
Earlier, JJP legislator Devender Babli took the government to task for its failure to post doctors at the Civil Hospital, Tohana, for several years. Congress members, including Kiran Choudhry, tried to corner Vij for the sorry state of health infrastructure, even as the minister claimed there had been a marked improvement in the facilities since the BJP formed the government in 2014.
