Abohar, December 31

Braving intense cold wave and fog, hundreds of people paid tributes to Captain Navpal Singh Sidhu on his 18th Balidan Diwas at his memorial located outside his native village, Chak 40 Rb, on the Sriganganagar-Padampur road.

Subedar Amarjit Singh Sirohi, from the 19th Maratha Light Infantry, offered a wreath on the statue of the martyr and said Indians would always remember the martyrdom of Navpal. "Whether we remain or not, his name will be immortal in years to come," he said.

Navpal was martyred in 2002 after he gunned down three PoK-trained terrorists in Surankote area of Poonch region in Jammu and Kashmir. He was presented the Shaurya Chakra posthumously.

Navpal's father Lieutenant Col Agyapal Singh Sidhu (retd) had led the offensive against the Pakistan Army in the 1965 and 1971 wars.

Additional District Collector Subhash Kumar said Navpal, who was inspired by his father and mother Rajinderpal Kaur, had made the supreme sacrifice after killing the three terrorists, who had infiltrated from across the border. "It's a matter of pride for all of us," he said.

Colonel (retd) Jagjit Singh and Colonel (retd) Daljit Singh Dhillon said, "In the most difficult weather and geographical conditions, the soldiers risked their lives. They are never behind in performing their duty as saviours of the borders."

Agyapal Singh Sidhu thanked the officials and people from various political and social organisations for standing by the family.
