Chandigarh, December 16
Home Minister Anil Vij is on oxygen support and is likely to remain in the ICU for the next few days. His condition is stated to be stable.
He was shifted to Medanta in Gurugram on Tuesday after he developed complications due to Covid. According to Dr AK Dubey, Medical Superintendent, doctors are monitoring his condition regularly.
"Vij was transferred from the PGIMS in Rohtak with Covid pneumonia. Probes have been done and the results are satisfactory. He is maintaining vital parameters on high flow nasal cannula on oxygen support. He is likely to stay in the ICU for a few days," read the minister's health bulletin.
Dr Virender Yadav, Gurugram Civil Surgeon, who visited Medanta on Wednesday, said the minister's condition was stable. Vij's younger brother Rajinder Vij said doctors had told him that functioning of his brother's lungs was affected by the infection, but he was improving.
A senior doctor said Vij had developed pneumonitis, due to which his oxygen saturation levels had dropped alarmingly. He had comorbid conditions like hypertension and diabetes and had recently undergone two surgeries due to a fracture in his left thigh bone.
Vij had tested positive for Covid on December 5, a fortnight after he volunteered for Bharat Biotech's vaccine candidate Covaxin. Bharat Biotech had clarified that clinical trials were based on a two-dose schedule, given 28 days apart. Vij had taken the first dose on November 19.
The company had said efficacy could be determined 14 days after the second dose. "Covaxin has been designed to be efficacious when subjects receive both doses," it had said. — TNS
