MC poll: Congress MLAs seek Speaker’s resignation

Tribune News Service
Chandigarh, December 16

A group of Congress MLAs on Wednesday targeted Assembly Speaker Gian Chand Gupta demanding his resignation for lowering the dignity of his office by indulging in the BJP activities in the run-up to December 27 MC election in Panchkula.

Congress MLAs BB Batra, Jagbir Malik, Amit Sihag, Aftab Ahmed, BL Saini and Subhash Deswal said the Speaker should first resign from his post and only then actively participate in the BJP's election campaign.

However, Gupta asserted that he being the elected representative of Panchkula, he was accountable to the people of the constituency and there was no rule that he should quit to participate in the MC poll campaign. He clarified that he had never participated in the BJP meetings in the Vidhan Sabha complex in the last one year.

Meanwhile, the Congress legislators also demanded a White Paper from the government on the matter of former chairman of the Special Publicity Cell Rocky Mittal, alleging misuse of Rs 1500 crore on publicity in the last six years.

Batra alleged that the government was making every effort to crush the farmers' movement. Batra cautioned the Prime Minister against taking the farmers' issue lightly as it was directly related to 80 per cent of the country's population.

The Congress MLAs said Cm Manohar Lal Khattar should call a special session of the Assembly to discuss the farmers' issue.
