Chandigarh, December 15
The Chandigarh Traders Association, Sector 17, has demanded direction elections for the Mayor's post with five-year term.
Association president Kamaljit Singh Panchhi urged UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore to take a concrete decision on amending the Municipal Corporation Act regarding electing the Mayor directly by residents of Chandigarh. Haryana had already adopted the pattern of direct elections for the Mayor's post with five-year term. This needs to be considered in Chandigarh also.
Seeking increase in the number of nominated councillors in the Municipal Corporation (MC), Panchhi stated that the civic body was formed in 1994. "There is a provision for nominated councillors who are experts in the fields and give their advice on the working of the MC run by the Mayor and elected councillors," he said.
Panchhi said the Administration had issued a draft notification increasing the number of elected councillors from 26 to 35. Similarly, the number of nominated councillors should also be increased.
He urged UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore to increase the numbers of nominated councillors from 9 to 13.
