Civic body to seek support from RWAs

Tribune News Service

Chandigarh, December 24

To make waste segregation and collection through its two-bin vehicles a success, the local MC has started reaching out to residents' welfare associations (RWAs).

The corporation, though late, has started distributing pamphlets for creating awareness among residents. It is also making efforts to enrol more collectors into the project, who are presently lifting mixed garbage through 'rehris' in Sectors 1 to 30, where the MC has already introduced the two-bin vehicles in the first phase.

"We have asked Sanitary Inspectors to hold meeting with RWAs and involve them in the process to create the initiative a success. We have enrolled more number of collectors. Gradually, the new system will come on track," said MC's Joint Commissioner Sorabh Arora.

In institutions such as the PU and the PGI, 'rehris' are picking up waste. "We will focus on the places later as these are managed by their own administrations," said an official.

Baljinder Singh Bittu, FOSWAC Chairman, said: "The actual feedback of the system will come in 10-15 days. We need to wait. But I think the civic body needs to have more vehicles."
