Patiala, December 18
The project of cleaning and beautification of Chhoti Nadi and Badi Nadi has commenced after "years of mulling over it". Rendered dirty due to flow of sewage for years, the state government is spending Rs208 crore on the project. The Patiala Development Authority (PDA) and the Drainage and Water Supply Department aim to complete it by the end of 2022.
Two cleaning plants
Surabhi Malik, Chief Administrator, PDA, said two plants would be set up for the 8-km stretch of Badi Nadi and the 4-km stretch of Chhoti Nadi. The project will also allow natural water recharge. All sewer water currently falling into the two water bodies will be channelled to the STPs and will fall into the 'nadis' after cleaning.
Surabhi Malik, Chief Administrator, PDA, said, "The survey work has already been completed and we will begin the work by the month-end."
She said 26 and 15 MLD plants would be established for both of these — nearly an 8-km stretch of Badi Nadi and a 4-km stretch of Chhoti Nadi. "The project will also allow natural water recharge. All sewer water currently falling into the two water bodies will be channelled to the STPs and will fall into the 'nadis' after cleaning," she said.
Officials said a major part of the project would be taken care of by the Drainage and Water Supply Department. She said the MC would look into the Swachh Bharat components, including establishment of public toilets.
The beautification project will come as a big relief for the city from the health point of view as the discharge of untreated water into the water bodies will be checked. Officials said cycling and walking tracks would also be established on the embankments of both water bodies.
