Chandigarh, December 23

Revellers just might have to ring in New Year sitting at home with the UT mulling over the imposition of a night curfew amid fears over the new strain of coronavirus discovered in the UK.

The night curfew could be imposed for a week after Christmas from 10 pm to 6 am to prevent and contain the coronavirus strain.

Details of UK-Asr flight passengers sought

The UT Health Department has sought details from the Amritsar airport authority about the Chandigarh residents who may have been co-passengers in the flight that boarded eight residents of Punjab, who were later found Covid positive in Amritsar. The Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme cell is going to trace the Chandigarh residents who boarded the UK-Amritsar flight and will quarantine them for 14 days. Besides, the city residents who had returned from the UK in the past four weeks will also be followed up

UT Adviser Manoj Parida said they had decided to wait and watch the situation for a few more days before taking a final call on imposing the night curfew in the city.

During a review meeting on the pandemic, UT Administrator VP Singh Badnore expressed concern about the new strain of Covid-19 virus.

Badnore directed Principal Secretary (Health) Arun Kumar Gupta and Director-General of Police Sanjay Kumar Beniwal to keep a track of eight travellers from the UK who tested positive in Amritsar.
