Six commercial buildings violate norms, razed

Tribune News Service

Patiala, August 28

A team from the building branch of the Municipal Corporation (MC) took action against buildings constructed in violation of the norms in the city today. Officials said they had issued notices to owners of buildings after which action was initiated.

Officials visited sites of illegal constructions near Nabha Gate in the Tripuri area, near the Jhill road, Krishna Enclave on the Sirhind road and backside of Gurdwara Dukhniwaran Sahib. Senior Town Planner Gautam Kumar said they took action against six commercial buildings constructed by owners in violation of the norms. All illegal construction was razed today, he added

Meanwhile, owners of the respective buildings decried stating that the MC had initiated biased action against them. An owner of the building near Nabha Gate, who is associated with a political party said, "We had got our building plan passed from the MC. There were minor deviations from the plan regarding which the corporation had sent us a notice around six months ago. But today, civic body officials suddenly took action against us."

"There are scores of violations in construction of buildings throughout the city, but the corporation has failed to act against them. Instead, official action on our building has resulted in loss of over Rs 5 lakh. We will welcome the move if the corporation does not act in a biased manner, but implements building construction rules for one and all," he added.

When contacted, Municipal Commissioner Poonamdeep Kaur said, "MC officials acted against violations. A number of complaints keep coming to our office and department's office in Chandigarh as well. We will continue issuing chalans and raze buildings wherever violations are found."
