Chandigarh, July 17
Goods worth lakhs were destroyed in a fire at a department store in Sector 46-C here this morning.
Four fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames. No loss of life was reported. However, grocery items and goods worth lakhs were destroyed in the fire. The exact cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained. However, the possibility of a short-circuit cannot be ruled out.
Passersby saw smoke coming out of the showroom around 8 am and informed the firemen and the shop owner. Soon, fire tenders reached the spot and initiated rescue operations.
"There was a panic in the area for sometime as a huge crowd gathered at the spot. The fire tenders reached on time and brought the situation under control," said Rashmi Saluja, a passerby.
